Remote control cars have always been popular and fascinating toys for kids. I had an old broken remote control car lying around, so i decided to use its receiver kit.
In this Instructable, i decided to make a wireless remote control car at home using PVC pipes and control it using the receiver from the broken car.

Even if you don't have the circuit, you can follow the instructable to make one easily at home. However, it is much more easy and economical to use a wireless kit from a cheap RC toy available in market. The connections should be simple as mostly all the components are mentioned on the circuit board.
In case the car doesn't perform as desired then there are few steps you can take to debug the car. If the car vaguely moves in any direction, then there might be problem with the polarity of the motors. Answer 1 year ago.This project modifies a Traxxas remote control car to be driven from a computer in a remote location. The car can be driven remotely while viewing its perspective through a camera mounted on the car.
The car also utilizes a pan tilt motor that moves the camera around so that the user can see everything going on from where the car is. We implemented this project at our university where the wifi network was obtainable across the entire campus. This allowed us to drive the car anywhere that it could connect to the wifi. Realistically if you were to implement this project on your own you could control the car from your computer anywhere that is within reach of that same wifi signal.Linux for tegra download
This instructable is laid out with the idea that if you were to implement this project, you would follow our steps exactly. There are many things that can be modified.

We personally used Raspian but any Linux OS will do as long as it has the capability of running python scripts. There are a plethora of online tutorials for getting your pi up and running. This was arguably the most difficult part of the project and will vary if you use a different car than the one we used.
The Traxxas motor controller that we had was a bit different than many motor controllers in RC cars. The Traxxas motor controller operates by first receiving a certain PWM pulse width modulation signal that initializes the controller. After receiving that signal, the PWM can be altered to increase or decrease the speed of the throttle. The steering servo acts like a typical servo where a certain PWM signal will align the wheels to be straight and incrementing that signal in either direction will turn the wheels.
We eventually connected our car up to an oscilloscope to read the pwm that was being sent to the motor controller and then we imitated that signal on a function generator to see if it would work. If you purchased the same pan-tilt motor that we did you can click here to find the instructions on how to build it. The assembly is fairly simple, but be careful not to lose the screws and to not over tighten them. When finished, you can mount the pan-tilt motor onto your pi case. If you purchased the same one that we did the holes are already cut out and ready.
To be able to maintain visual while you are driving it is helpful to have a webcam server setup with your Pi camera. The first thing that needs to be done is to plug the camera into the Pi. The ribbon fits nicely into the port next to the HDMI port.
You want to make sure your raspberry pi is completely updated before you start this process. Also, use the "Basic Installation" steps This method was chosen because of the minimal latency you get while running off of this server.
It isn't perfect, but it is better than the 3 second lag time that was found using other methods. This way it should be less than a second lag time depending on your signal strength. After you have made it through the steps you should be ready to use it. Just go into your web browser and type in the IPaddress of your raspberry Pi. You should have a link to follow there and then you will be able to see the video.

As I said earlier, I am very happy with the result but I know that there is always some improvements to make the car better. The only improvement that I have in mind right now is changing the motors that I have with faster ones because the car is not fast enough for me.

This article is focused to guide hobbyists to build their own homemade RC car with minimal components. To build a RC car we need to make sure that these blocks are available.
The above blocks are divided into two sections Remote and Car for the purpose of understanding. Starting from Keypad which controls the movement of the Car whereas Encoder and decoders are meant to encode and decode the movement signals for secured transmission.
Also transmitter sends the movement signals through wireless medium and receiver fetches the signals for the destination. When these buttons are pressed it passes the movement signals to the encoder. The Data pins AD0 to AD3 is active low hence pressing the button closes the circuit and a logic 1 or high signal is fed to these pins. It also contains Address Pins A0 to A7 which allow us to try out different address combinations for secured transmission of data but make sure you use the same address combination in the receiving end decoder.

The received encoded data signals is received through the antenna and the signal is obtained from DATA pin to feed the decoder. The signal is then decoded by the decoder, remember to use the same address combination used in the encoder if any otherwise the movement signals will be interpreted incorrectly. The decoder also consists of VT pin which serves as a identification if any RF link is established, LED was connected to this pin for identification. It is highly impossible to drive heavy loads such as motors using decoder IC hence we have used a dedicated LD IC for this purpose.

We are done with the Remote control and the circuits which is about to be placed inside the car. Now next important thing is provide mechanism to move our RC car front and back. Fix a gear to the motor and to the rail which connects the rear wheels. Fix the motor close to the gear in the rail so that when motor makes a movement the car moves forward.
Likewise when the motor rotates in the opposite direction the car should move backwards. Steering mechanism is bit tricky than the movement mechanism since it requires bit of mechanics. The above animation shows the working of Rack and pinion steering mechanism. So when this motor moves in clockwise direction the car turn left and vice versa.
